The 2008 NBA All-Star game is being hosted by New Orleans this year and the game begins at 8pm Eastern, with the halftime performance featuring Harry.

On Sunday, Feb. 17, Connick and Marsalis will take to the court for the 57th NBA All-Star Game at the New Orleans Arena. January 2008

Harry to return to Broadway?
Wednesday, 30 January 2008 at 10:34 PM

The New York Post has an article entitled Connick Comeback : Singer Considers Gershwin Hybrid discussing a Broadway show that Harry and Pajama Game director, Kathleen Marshall, are shopping to theater owners in New York City.

Ever since their pleasant revival of "The Pajama Game" won a surprise Tony Award in 2006 - beating out the great "Sweeney Todd" - the two close friends have been looking for their next show.

And it will be . . . "They All Laughed."

Never heard of it?

Who has?

"They All Laughed" opened at Goodspeed on Aug. 11, 2001. The critics gave it polite enough reviews, but there was plenty of backstage trouble - the director pulled out one week before opening night - and the show quickly became just another poster in Goodspeed's foyer.

The convoluted plot involves Prohibition, a Temperance Society, bootlegging, speakeasies, a playboy, an heiress and some lovable gangsters.

But it was the songs, pulled from the golden Gershwin trunk and inserted into the story line, that carried the evening: "I've Got a Crush on You," "He Loves and She Loves," "Blah Blah Blah," "Do Do Do" and "S'Wonderful," among them.

As dopey as the plot of "They All Laughed" might be, I suspect that plenty of theatergoers will line up to hear Connick sing those songs.

In "The Pajama Game," he brought down the house with "Hey, There," "There Once Was a Man" and, accompanying himself on the piano, "Hernando's Hideaway."

Just imagine what he'll do with a Gershwin tune.

The first couple of reviews are starting to trickle in from the European tour. Check out the Tour section of the forum to read what a couple fans in Berlin thought of the October 24th show. Meanwhile, if you know anyone who went to the concerts in Copenhagen or The Hague, please persuade them to write a quick post about their experience!

Tour Updates : additions, cancellations, and rumors
Friday, 19 October 2007 at 9:06 AM

T-5 days until Harry Connick, Jr. and his big band make their return to Europe starting with a concert on Wednesday, October 24th in Berlin, Germany. If you are among the lucky fans to have tickets to any of the sixteen tour dates throughout Europe, please stop by the Tour section of the forum and tell us all about it!

First, the good tour news, there are more concerts in Spain that have been announced in the last few weeks:

06 Nov 2007 : Malaga, Spain @ Teatro Cervantes
07 Nov 2007 : Zaragoza, Spain @ Sala Multiusos
10 Nov 2007 : Barcelona, Spain @ Palau de la Música

Second, the bad news, the concert on October 25th in Hamburg, Germany has been cancelled.
The news from the OS is:

Harry Connick Jr. and SonyBMG recently scheduled two showcase performances to welcome his Big Band back to Germany after almost 20 years. The parties subsequently decided that it was best to concentrate all of their efforts and resources on a single showcase performance in Berlin given how little time they had to promote the showcases. Harry regrets any inconvenience that this decision has caused but looks forward to returning to Hamburg in the future.

Finally, there is unconfirmed information that Harry and his big band will be touring in SE Asia in March 2008. As of now, we have no dates or locations, just the possibility that if you're a Harry fan in SE Asia, you may have something to look forward to in 2008!

Harry has filmed a new commerical for Lincoln's 'Dreams' campaign. The broadcast debut will be during the Saints vs. Seahawks NFL game tonight (Sunday, October 14) on NBC. The game is scheduled for a 6:15pm Eastern kick-off.

A press release from Ford Motor Co. describes the ad thusly:

The "Hometown" ad was shot during Connick's return to his hometown of New Orleans to break ground on a new music center and help build Musicians' Village, a Habitat for Humanity project conceived by Connick and fellow musician Branford Marsalis after Hurricane Katrina consisting of 70 single-family homes for displaced musicians and others affected by the storm. The ad features Connick driving through town in a 2008 Lincoln MKX reminiscing about growing up and becoming a musician, and the importance of remembering your roots and giving back. The ad ends with a celebration at Musicians' Village and Connick saying, "My dream is to get the good times rolling again in my hometown."

And for those who don't want to wait to watch it on TV in a few hours, you can watch it here, with additional behind-the-scenes footage of Harry talking about New Orleans:

Harry then sits down to talk with Johnny where, among other things, he recounts how he auditioned for the Tonight Show when he was nine years old, but didn't make the cut.

Not sure of the exact date of this show's airing, but most likely late 1991 - early 1992. If you know more about the appearance or just want to discuss it, head over to the board.

In-depth interview with Harry on Minnesota Public Radio
Monday, 9 April 2007 at 2:12 PM

When Harry was in Minneapolis on April 5th, he did an hour-long interview for the Midmorning radio show. It is a very engaging interview done by an interviewer who had really done her research and had great questions for Harry, addressing new topics or following up on old ones. Its great to hear Harry talk about what he thinks of some of his old work (in a word: weak), his thoughts on being a performer in the New Orleans tradition of truly entertaining the crowd, as well as the recovery in New Orleans.

Harry appears on CNN
Monday, 29 January 2007 at 12:17 PM

If you were lucky enough to have had CNN on at approx. 11:50AM Eastern time this morning, you probably saw Harry give a short interview regarding the state of New Orleans recovery.

If we find any additional information about the unannounced appearance, it will be posted here.

[UPDATE] A transcript from the appearance is available on the CNN website. The transcript is of the entire hour of CNN Newsroom and Harry's portion appears about three quarters the way down the page.

A quote from the appearance:

NGUYEN: As you try to make the situation better as you call it, the information has to be out there. Words have to be spoken and it has to stay out there on the forefront. Were you disappointed at all that Katrina, and its aftermath, all of the cities hit by this storm were not mentioned at all in the State of the Union Address, by the president last week.

CONNICK: Well, again, it's not -- was I upset? No, not really. All I can do is what I can do. And that's what I'm interested in. And we're doing our part to keep the word out there. I'm about to go on tour. And I'm talking to you right now.

And I'll do everything I can to remind people that although New Orleans is on the rebound the residential areas have a very, very long way to go and we need help. We need people to go down and spend money, and support the local economy and we need people who are displaced to come back home. That's really all I'm spending my time thinking about, to be perfectly frank.

Katrina: One year later
Tuesday, 29 August 2006 at 8:00 AM

It's now been one year since Hurricane Katrina, and New Orleans still has a lot of rebuilding to do. According to state estimates, only 45 percent of the city's original population has returned (ref: CNN). Roughly a third of the city's schools, hospitals and libraries remain closed (ref: CNN). These hard facts speak volumes about the difficult road ahead.

In his interview with Matt Lauer yesterday, Harry had this to say about the state of New Orleans one year later:

It's pretty bad, Matt, you know. But I think steps are being taken and there's a lot of people that are really really trying to rebuild. There's some people that don't think that it's a good idea, but those that do are really really trying hard.

Beyond the news coverage of Katrina, consider visiting the Katrina section of connick.com's discussion forum. Contained within its many threads is a vast collection of news articles, personal accounts, website links, and discussions expressing a variety of perspectives on the situation that continues to this day. In the first days and weeks after the hurricane struck, connick.com came together to provide direct support for affected members of Harry's band. Our diverse forum community includes: a resident of New Orleans who has provided first-hand accounts of the daily struggle to rebuild lives and the city; people who have contributed to the rebuilding process, either by volunteering their personal time or simply by visiting and kick-starting the local economy, which the city so desperately needs; as well as people across the country and the world who wish to remain informed and involved in the ongoing effort to save the treasure that is New Orleans.

There are many organizations "really really trying" to help bring back the music and rebuild lives. We'd like to highlight the following and remind you that your support will continue to be needed for the long-term.

New Orleans Habitat Musicians' Village
Harry and Branford's project for displaced New Orleans musicians.

Arabi Wrecking Krewe
A dedicated group working to help NOLA musicians return home and rebuild. Craig Klein from Harry's big band is a founding member of the AWK.

Tipitina's Foundation
Working to rebuild the music culture of New Orleans by aiding musicians in finding gigs and replacing instruments.

New Orleans Musicians Hurricane Relief Fund
Goals are to provide humanitarian outreach to New Orleans musicians affected by Hurricane Katrina and to revive New Orleans' unique musical culture.

Music Rising
Joint venture by Gibson and Guitar Center, billed as "an instrument replacement fund for musicians of the Gulf Coast."

Harry featured in 'DownBeat' : September issue
Thursday, 24 August 2006 at 5:03 PM

From downbeat.com:

This special issue of DownBeat focuses on New Orleans, paying tribute to the musical traditions of the city one year after Hurricane Katrina and the floods. With guest editor Branford Marsalis, and drummer Bob French of the Original Tuxedo Jazz Band on the cover, this issue leads off with a feature on New Orleans musical families, a revered institution that dates back to the 19th century.

Harry is featured in an interview entitled Booker, Fess and Beyond . While the print interview is a keeper with classic photos of young Harry with Booker, the real treat is listening to Harry speak at length (nearly a full hour!) about NOLA style piano playing, the state of New Orleans, and many other subjects. In the interview, Harry demonstrates his development as a piano player and the influences the masters of the genre had on him. This well-conducted interview is a must-listen for any fan. You're guaranteed to hear something new and interesting about Harry.

New single : "All These People"
Wednesday, 16 August 2006 at 11:15 PM

Columbia Records is set to release "All These People" by Harry Connick, Jr. on August 29. All proceeds from sale of the song, written and composed by Connick and performed by the acclaimed singer/pianist in duet with gospel singer Kim Burrell, will benefit New Orleans Habitat Musicians' Village.

The poignant lyrics, written after Hurricane Katrina had devastated New Orleans, were inspired by the suffering Connick witnessed when he visited his native city in the days immediately following the tragedy, and capture both the individual anguish of those left waiting for rescue and the bonds of brotherhood formed during the disaster. "The song is all about the people who were left stranded at the convention center," Connick explains. "I wrote four verses, each describing what I saw as I was taken through by a kind fellow I had met on the street earlier that day named Darryl."

Burrell, who Connick describes as "the perfect choice" for representing the brave people he met, shaped the final form of the song. "She, too, had been deeply affected by the hurricane, and was moved by the challenge of putting her feelings into song. After I read her the lyrics, she asked that her voice specifically represent 'the first two people we saw [who] left the way they came.' These were two dead bodies I saw when I first arrived at the convention center. Kim also asked that a final verse be added for her to sing, which I wrote in the studio. My favorite part of the performance is when Kim improvises the line 'come see about me,' which was all those folks wanted that day, someone to come and see about them."

The single is being released on the one-year anniversary of Katrina on iTunes, and is the first single off Harry Connick, Jr.'s forthcoming New Orleans big band album, OH MY NOLA, set for release this fall. In addition to well-known songs associated with New Orleans, the new album will also feature several original songs by Connick that reflect on all aspects of this fabled and embattled cradle of American musical culture.

Back in New Orleans
Tuesday, 6 September 2005 at 12:00 PM

Harry was reporting for the Today Show from New Orleans again this morning. He checked out his Dad's house and rescued a man stranded on his porch. Here are two clips: Harry returns to his father's home and Harry talks to Katie Couric (Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player required).

Harry has also agreed to be honorary chair of Habitat for Humanity's "Operation Home Delivery", a long-term rebuilding plan for families victimized by Hurricane Katrina in the Big Easy and along the Gulf Coast. More info in HFH's full press release.

More Video, More Ways to Help
Monday, 5 September 2005 at 12:00 PM

Here's a clip from the Concert for Hurricane Relief, when all the performers got up on stage and sang When The Saints Go Marching In. And one more from Saturday's Larry King special, with Harry and the band performing Way Down Yonder In New Orleans. As always, Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player are required to view these.

If anybody knows how to save local copies of these video clips, please let me know. I'm sure MSN and CNN will remove them eventually, and it would be nice to preserve these important, emotional segments.

During his appearance on the Larry King special, Harry mentioned that he was heading back to New Orleans this week to continue helping out in any way that he can.

As of this evening, our Hurricane Relief Fund has collected over $6,500 to benefit New Orleans musicians! Thanks so much to everyone, and please, keep spreading the word. You have already helped make a huge difference.

We've also made some connick.com merchandise available for purchase at CafePress. All profits from those sales will go directly into our relief fund. Start buying those Christmas gifts now -- after all, who wouldn't appreciate a "Freakishly Strong" t-shirt?

NBC Special Correspondent

Harry was interviewed by Katie Couric on the Today Show this morning, as he stood in front of a flooded New Orleans street corner. This account comes from one of our forum members who was watching at the time:

"Harry was amazing during their 7 minute long conversation. He was choked up at some points, understandably, but he was also beaming with pride and hope for the city's future.

He talked about his Aunt Jessie and Uncle John who were airlifted from the rooftop of their home and said they were safe. He finally heard from his Dad yesterday or the day before (Harry Sr. went to Mississippi but was in the eye of the storm, Harry said). He said he's heard from his bandmates that were affected and that they're saying their homes are under 20 ft. of water, but they're alive.

Katie Couric confirmed with Harry that he'll be working with NBC Nightly News and the Today Show as a special correspondant. He said he's willing to do whatever he can to help 'celebrate survival' and 'rebuild'."

Harry's efforts so far have been nothing short of astounding. He risked his own personal safety to venture into into the city and, in fact, was the first "person of authority" to bring any attention to the horrific conditions at the New Orleans Convention Center. I'm not sure how long MSN keeps video clips online, but for now, you can view three of his segments that aired today, with Amy Robach, Katie Couric, and Brian Williams (Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player required).

Update on the Hurricane Relief Fund: As of 10:00 PM EDT this evening, we have collected over $2,500. Some of this has already been sent out via Western Union this afternoon. Thanks to everyone who has donated and helped spread the word about this special fund. New Orleans will not be back to normal any time soon and these guys will continue to need our support in the coming months. Information and updates on our relief fund will continue to be available at http://connick.com/nolarelief.

August 2005

Katrina Benefit Concert
Wednesday, 31 August 2005 at 12:00 PM

Harry will be participating in a benefit concert to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina. The hour long show will air this Friday at 8PM EDT on NBC, MSNBC, and CNBC. Other performers will include Wynton Marsalis and Tim McGraw.

Update on the Hurricane Relief Fund: As of 11:25 PM EDT, we have already raised over $800 that will go directly to the affected band members. One care package has already been sent out! Thanks to everyone who has donated so far, and please continue to share the URL with anyone you feel might be willing to help. All of the information on how to contribute is available at http://connick.com/nolarelief.

I should also mention that Harry will be performing three duo shows with Branford Marsalis in the month of September. See the tour page for the details. These shows were scheduled prior to the hurricane, but I was on vacation and neglected to post them.

New Orleans Hurricane Relief Fund
Tuesday, 30 August 2005 at 12:00 PM

Dear Readers,

The trail of destruction left by Hurricane Katrina has left some areas of Louisiana absolutely devastated. Several of our favorite musicians, including long time members of Harry's big bands, reside in parts of New Orleans that are reportedly completely under water.

Thankfully, we have received reports from many band members that they are safe, accounted for, and out of harm's way. However, the total destruction caused by the storm will be undetermined for weeks, especially on a personal level.

In an effort to provide some assistance to those musicians who will be rebuilding their lives in the affected areas, connick.com has created a relief fund. We hope that you will consider contributing to the fund by following the instructions provided at the following URL: http://connick.com/nolarelief.

So many New Orleans musicians have touched our lives over the years. If you have met any of them in person, chances are you'll agree that they are quite possibly the warmest, most sincere group of individuals you will ever encounter. Our thoughts are with them and their families at this time, and we hope that they will be able to return to their homes shortly with as little disruption as possible.

We thank you for your time and support.

Sincerely,

Chris Eng

Occasion: Connick on Piano, Volume 2
Wednesday, 4 May 2005 at 12:00 PM

Harry recently teamed up with long-time friend and peer, Branford Marsalis, to record their first ever full-length duo album together. Recorded over a March weekend in North Carolina, Occasion is the exquisite result of two gifted and versatile musicians bringing out the best in each other. The new disc will be released June 14, 2005 by Marsalis Music. (Support this site by pre-ordering the CD from Amazon).

The live premiere of Occasion will take place at the 25th anniversary of the Ottawa Jazz Festival on Friday, June 24. The only U.S. date confirmed thus far is Saturday, June 25 at the JVC Jazz Festival in New York City. Along with the live premiere of Occasion, Harry will perform on the opening night of the Ottawa Jazz Festival on Thursday, June 23. The performance will feature Harry with a few members of his esteemed big band, along with the National Arts Centre Orchestra.

On a completely unrelated note, happy 10th anniversary to this website, connick.com. I don't remember the exact date, but I do vividly recall sitting in my dorm room on a rainy Berkeley evening, piecing together the first version of this site sometime in late April 1995 (go back in time). It has been a remarkable ten years witnessing Harry's musical style take so many different and exciting directions. Thanks, Harry, for making brilliant music and always leaving us wanting more.
